Not by Water Baptism

The following verses are written incorrectly. Please correct them by putting a line through the incorrect parts:

  • John 3:16. That whosoever believeth in Him and is baptized should not perish, but have everlasting life. This is incorrect. It actually reads: That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
  • John 3:36. He that believeth on the Son and is baptized hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son and is not baptized shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. This is incorrect. It actually reads: He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
  • John 6:47. "...He that believeth on me and is baptized hath everlasting life". Incorrect. It actually reads: "...He that believeth on me hath everlasting life."
  • John 5:24. "...He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, and is baptized hath everlasting life". Incorrect. It actually reads: "...He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life."
  • Mark 16:16. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not and is not baptized shall be damned. Incorrect. It actually reads: He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
  • Acts 16:31. "...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and be baptized, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Incorrect. It reads: "...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house."

True or False:

  1. Water baptism is necessary for salvation. True or False. Let's see the answer in Ephesians 2:8-9. (For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.). Titus 3:5. (Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost). So again: Water baptism is necessary for salvation. True or False. The answer is False. It is not necessary for salvation.
  2. Water baptism is necessary for obedience once a person is saved. True or False. Let's see Acts 10:48. (And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.). Acts 8:36-37. (And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.); Acts 2:38. (Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.). Let's repeat the statement. Water baptism is necessary for obedience once a person is saved. True or False. The answer is True.
  3. In Mark 16:16, we learn that a person is damned because he was not baptized. True or False. (Mark 16:16. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.). Let's repeat the statement. In Mark 16:16, we learn that a person is damned because he was not baptized. True or False. The answer is False. The Scripture teaches that a person is damned because he does not believe.
  4. According to Acts 2:41, and Acts 8:36-37, those who were baptized in the early church were already believers and thus they were already saved! In other words, they first believed and then they were baptized. True or False. Let's see: (Acts 2:41. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.). (Acts 8:36-37. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.). Returning to the statement. The answer is True. These people first believed, then they were baptized.
  5. Baptism is something that a person does to be saved. False.
  6. Baptism is something that a saved person does. True.
  7. Water baptism cleanses us from all sin. True or False. Let's see Ephesians 1:7 and 1 John 1:7. (Ephesians 1:7. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace). (1 John 1:7. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.). Again the statement: Water baptism cleanses us from all sin is False. It is the blood of Jesus Christ that cleanses us from all sins.
  8. In Mark 16:16, we learn that the UNBELIEVER is damned (condemned) whether or not he has been baptized in water. True or False. Let's read it again. (Mark 16:16. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.). The answer is True. He that believeth not shall be damned, whether he is baptized or not.
  9. In Matthew 1:21, we learn that it is water baptism that saves a person from his sins. True or False. (Matthew 1:21. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.). The answer is False. It is not water baptism, but the Lord Jesus who saves a person from his sins.
  10. Titus 3:5 teaches us that a person is saved only by the mercy of God and not by anything that we ourselves Do. True or False. (Titus 3:5. Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost). The answer is True. a person is saved only by the mercy of God, and not by anything we ourselves do.

Let's see Acts 16:31.

And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Is a person saved the moment he believes or is he saved the moment he is baptized in water? A person is saved the moment he believes on the Lord Jesus Christ..

So far, we have learned that a person is not saved by: trying to keep the law, or by good works, or by his own effort, or by water baptism.

Now we are ready to learn how a person is saved: by Grace through Faith. Seeing you on the next lesson!!!
